A Biomedical Autism Intervention Doctor Explains:

A sulfite sensitivity does not constitute an automatic allergy to sulfa drugs and vice versa. Many people with asthma who have obvious reactions to sulfites can many times have some in small amounts and suffer no adverse reactions. A sensitivity reaction to sulfites is not a true allergy like a sulfa drug allergy, and so allergy testing for sulfites in unreliable.

Sulfates are chemical compounds with sulfur surrounded by oxygen atoms. It is a derivative of sulfuric acid and can complex with various minerals in the body to form stable compounds such as magnesium sulfate found in Epsom Salt (which is used as a laxative or a muscle soothing aid in bathwater). Some people can have sulfate sensitivity, but it is questionable whether this is truly an immune reaction to the sulfate or an immune reaction to chemical compounds attached to sulfate. More commonly, a sulfate sensitivity is a biochemical reaction from other sources, and have nothing to do with an allergy. This leads us in the next discussion – sulfur supplement sensitivity.

Sulfur sensitivity can occur when too much homocysteine is pushed through the trans-sulfuration pathway creating an abundance of sulfur compounds. This is particularly a problem if an enzyme called CBS is up-regulated creating an increased production of sulfur byproducts. These byproducts can contribute to the overproduction of ammonia. Ammonia can lead to irritability, hand-flapping, stimming behavior, language problems and other chemical imbalances in individuals on the autism-spectrum. Other chemical systems in the body become stressed leading to a further difficulty in eradicating ammonia. Genetic mutations in the CBS and MTHFR complexes make this problem worst.

Finally, an enzyme called SUOX (sulfite oxidase) in a deficiency state will effect sulfate regulation which effects glutathione production, as well as sulfates for other proteins in the body that support protein structure. Glutathione is our bodies’ most potent antioxidant and supports cellular detoxification. There is a genetic disorder that leads to severe brain damage and death with the SUOX enzyme deficiency, but it is likely possible that sub-clinical stressors in this enzyme could adversely affect some children on the autism-spectrum, while not causing a disease process.

The likely scenario is if children are having difficulty with sulfur containing supplements (i.e. taurine, Epsom salt, MSM, methionine) that a genetic mutation pattern has occurred in the CBS and MTHFR genes, and has nothing to do with a sulfur allergy – which we know is a misnomer.

Autism is present in many children and adults around the world.  Many people have problems with it – but by no means is it a crippling condition or disorder in the majority of cases.  It is nothing to be feared, but it is something that parents, teachers and daycare providers should be aware of and learn to work with.

A child with autism could be compared to someone who’s socially awkward or sensitive, except that autistic children consistently have trouble in relationships. They’re not looking for the right person or the right moment.  They just happen to have some trouble expressing themselves in a way that most people define as normal and healthy.  This doesn’t make them any less of a person, but it does mean that we should be careful in terms of what we do and say because dealing with an autistic person the wrong way could have negative effects on their autism social skills.

An autistic child could also have some trouble saying exactly what they mean, the way that any of us could have trouble sometimes.  We’ve all had those moments – we’ve stumbled over the right things to say at the right time and maybe, just maybe, we blurted out something embarrassing or couldn’t accurately express what we were trying to.  You remember how that feels, right?  Well, people with this disorder are stuck with that feeling much of time.

Autism symptoms can vary among children, which can cause trouble when they first head out to school.  Sometimes there is a tendency for these children to have tics.  This is because autism causes the brain to interpret the world a little differently.  We all take for granted that we can understand the way things that we see work – or at least, we understand that the world is that way.

Children with autism, understandably, act a little differently because of this.  Some of them might have short fuses on their tempers.  Some of them are extremely sensitive to loud noises.  So sensitive in fact, that they might throw a fit if a motorcycle drives by, or if a thunderstorm picks up.   Some of them have tics comparable to people who suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder – but that’s because every day, they have some trouble processing what’s going on around them.  They could have tremendous IQs, but because they’re not receiving the same information as efficiently or as clearly as we are, they find themselves angrier and testier than the rest of us.

Who could blame them?  Imagine for a day that you kept missing the middle words in any sentence.  Imagine that your internet connection speeds up and slows down and occasionally, shows the page in a different color or even an entirely different language – let’s see if anyone could control their temper on a busy day under those conditions.

Try living that for a lifetime.

Parents have to be understanding to their kids, and so does the rest of the world.  With a lot of love, patience and helpful autism therapies, this condition can be improved upon. Children deserve at least that much effort if it will help make their lives easier.

The signs of autism sometimes show up during infancy, but it isn’t until around three years old that children exhibit the milder signs. Because early intervention is crucial for the development of the child, the following guidelines are presented to assist parents in recognizing mild autism in their child.

* It is difficult for them to make friends. Socialization is impaired because of an inability to communicate effectively. If they are able to start a conversation with a peer, they may not be able to sustain it.

* They become focused on one activity to the exclusion of their surroundings. They may even sit and stare at a toy or other object for long stretches of time.

* They show a decreased ability to make eye contact with others and are unable to maintain it for long when they do succeed at it.

*Sudden temper tantrums may occur over situations that are not bothersome to average children. Yet when it comes to others, they show a distinct lack of consideration for feelings and desires.

* An autistic child may repeat lines from a conversation, book, or movie incessantly.

* The child might talk too much or talk about things that are unrelated to the current conversation. Attempts to draw them back to the topic at hand can be futile.

* They may have extremely precise knowledge of things that seem trivial to those around them. For example, a mildly autistic child might know every type of bolt used on a specific type of vehicle.

* They may have impaired fine and gross motor skills ability.

* They may not pick on cues from the body language of others.

Autism, whether mild or severe has been described as being “locked inside oneself”. They usually recognize that something is wrong with them and this can cause distress leading to depression and a worsening of their symptoms. Because of impaired social development, children with mild autism are often bullied and teased. This causes them more psychological damage and if the problem is not addressed, it may cause their condition to worsen into the more severe form of autism.
